Ug. Book review. Grunt.
Finished reading Mary Gentle's Grunts. Tee hee. Still laughing. Very funny book. I thouroughly enjoyed it, although the ending, for me, suffered from being both protracted and convenient... the book doesn't quite know where to end.
But... I'm still snickering. It's amazing how you can grow to like and care about characters with very, very few redeaming qualities.
Mary Gentle definately has a thing for military groups, and 'grittiness'. (Never miss an opportunity for exploding intestines or bodily fluids). This was exactly what I expected from her after reading Ash. I would go on to say that it is a far better book than Ash. She takes less time getting her characters where they need to be, and the humor keeps it moving more successfully.
I like her writing, but have a philosophic difference with her on grittiness and naughtiness. Guess it's that I essentially LIKE knights in shining armor.
I have to call her to task, also, for peppering her work with words like burgeonet, sallet, gorget, tasset- words that most people aren't going to know. Heck, I didn't know them before I started getting into armor.
But the Tolkien references are so irreverent it bust my gut. Oh, god, the wedding ring! The prancing pony!
Okay, that's my book review for the day. Go out and read Grunts, it'll make you want to be an Orc, or at least just a Marine.
tee hee.
